As well as giving you the chance to get involved in a fantastic and healthy sport, this is also the kind of holiday which lets you enjoy some sun and soak up the fun atmosphere on some of the world’s best beaches. If you can’t wait to get in the water and start surfing then here are the best places to do it this year. Playa Grande - Costa Rica

Playa Grande - Costa Rica

This is an ideal surfing destination for a number of reasons. For a start, the weather is usually great; the beach is breathtakingly beautiful, and the water is warm and clean. The waves are big enough to be exhilarating but not so big that only experts can surf here. This laid back resort lies on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and there are plenty of other surfing towns that you can go to around here if you like to move around while you are on holiday. One of the other reasons for coming to this part of the world is the wildlife. As well as being a hotspot for surfers from around the world it is also one of the planet’s most important nesting sites for leatherback turtles. If you want to combine your water sports with a bit of turtle spotting, then the best time of year to come is between October and March. All in all, it is the kind of surf destination which you won’t want to leave once you get here and sample it. Hanalei - Hawaii

Hanalei - Hawaii

When you first start thinking about finding a surfing paradise, then Hawaii is sure to be one of the first places to cross your mind. You will find all of the ingredients for an unforgettable trip here and Hanalei is a prime example of the best kind of Hawaiian destination. It is on the welcoming Island of Kauai, and it is a great place to learn how to surf if you don’t already know the basics, as there are surf schools and some benign waves to be discovered in the delightful two-mile long Hanalei Bay. The weather is everything you could hope for in a Hawaiian holiday and the relaxed atmosphere is sure to get you in the right mood as soon as you arrive here. The waves that arrive here vary in size considerably, and if you want to see the professional surfers do their business, then this is somewhere you might be lucky enough to do so. However, because smaller waves also break here and the bay has a sandy bottom, it is also a great place for beginners to get started and learn how to enjoy this great sport. If you are a complete beginner, then you will want to be smart by making a personal risk assessment of the area to choose the right spot to get started. Surfer’s Point - Australia

Surfer’s Point - Australia

Australia is another country you should consider if you are looking to get out on the waves in style. Surfer’s Point in Margaret River is the place to be if you want to surf in Western Australia. The waves here are big and predictable, making it a great destination for anyone who doesn’t want to run the risk of going home disappointed. You can see waves of up to 18 feet come in here and between November and May is when the sea is at its most potent. The good news for less experienced surfers is that you can move out to the area at Margaret River Mouth and enjoy some smaller waves and a sandy landing until you get your confidence levels up. Like most of the planet’s top surfing destinations, there is a fun but laid back vibe to be found here.
